Frequently Asked Questions

  • In the past, physical therapy always followed strict, standardized care protocols. The problem with that is injuries — and patients — aren't "standard." And, injuries often have contributing factors that either harm or help progress. So, a holistic approach is about 1) gathering all the info — from biomechanics to stress, nutrition, lifestyle, and more — and 2) then looking at all the possible ways to treat — manual therapy, strength training, mobility work, dry needling, soft tissue mobilization/ massage, yoga postures, etc. — and with that full picture, we create a therapeutic program specifically for the individual.

  • While both dry needling and acupuncture use needles for therapeutic purposes, and both utilize natural trigger points beneath the dermis of the body, the two are distinctly different. Dry needling is performed by a licensed PT after a thorough evaluation of the skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems. It addresses areas where the body's muscles may have become contracted and "locked" into their shortened (or contracted) state when injured, strained, or stressed. Acupuncture, on the other hand, is a traditional Chinese therapy based on the concept of Qi or Chi — "life force energy" — and the acupuncture needles are intended to redirect the flow of Qi in order to promote physical restoration through energetic healing work. Amy Slabaugh practices dry needling, and she holds an Advanced Certification in Integrative Dry Needling.
